Objective: Dietary fiber improves metabolic syndrome by improving obesity, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia and hypercholesterolemia. There has been a growing need for a new source of dietary fiber. We evaluated the clinical effect of dietary fiber derived from lees of brown rice in type 2 diabetes and assessed the potential of lees of brown rice as a new source of dietary fiber.

Methods: This study is a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study, scheduled for 12 weeks. Thirty subjects were randomly assigned to receive either a dietary fiber supplement from lees of brown rice (LB) or a mixed-grain based dietary product (MG). The body weight, waist circumference, body composition, lipid profiles and other laboratory parameters were measure at baseline and at the 12th week.

Results: The LB group showed greater reduction in waist (-2.80 -cm vs -0.93 cm, p=0.032) and hip circumferences (-1.00 cm vs 0.92 cm, p=0.017) compared to the MG group. In addition, the consumption of LB resulted in significant lower levels of aspartate transaminase (-4.36 IU/ml vs -0.07 IU/ml, p=0.044) and alanine transaminase (-6.64 IU/ml vs 0.07 IU/ml, p=0.038) than diet with MG. The additive dietary fiber diet with LB had a tendency to increase interluekin 10 (0.63 pg/ml vs -0.91 pg/ml, p=0.518) and to decrease interluekin 6 (-1.00 pg/ml vs 0.24 pg/ml, p=0.277) compared to the diet with MG.

Conclusions: In conclusion, this study revealed that the dietary fiber from lees of brown rice reduces waist and hip circumferences in type 2 diabetes.
