Abstract
We compared the anesthetic effects of barbiturate and propofol on mannitol-induced blood- brain-barrier disruption in four groups of each 6 rats. Group I was a barbiturate saline control, group 2 was propofol saline control, group 3 given propofol mannitol, and group 4 given barbiturate mannitol. There was no significant difference between group 1 and 2, or between group 3 and 4. These results suggest that barbiturate can be replaced with propofol for anesthesia in mannitol-induced blood-brain-barrier disruption.
