The effectiveness of sliding conjunctival flap for pterygium Operation was evaluated by a retrospective study of 18 eyes of 18 patients from March 1, 1995 to June 1, 1997. There were 8 men (27 to 56 years old) and 10 women (33 to 63), and their mean age was 40.4 years old. They were followed up during the period of 11.2 months (3 to 29). There was only one case out of 18 eyes that the pterygium recurred (5.6%) and no other complications were noted. Thirteen eyes were randomly chosen and were given 0.02% mitomycin C eye drops postoperatively. The recurrent pterygium occurred in mitomycin-C used group, but no recurrence in non-used group. tt is conduded that the sliding conjunctival flap is a safe and effective method for the treatment of the pterygium, and postoperative mitomycin C adjunctive therapy has no additional advantage in reducing the recurrence rate of the pterygium.en
