Parenting Stressand Coping Style of Nurses with Preschooler

Abstract

This study aims to identify the relationships between parenting stress and the coping styles of nurses who are the parents of preschoolers. The data was collected from 119 nurses, worked at a University Medical Center in Gyeonggi province from August 5 to October 31 and who were parenting preschool children. The instrumentaused for this study were the Parenting Stress Scale by Kihyun Kim and Heekyung Kang (1997) and the Stress Coping Styles Scale by Lazarusand Folkman (1984), translated into Korean by Junghee Kim (1987) and revised by Yumi Jeong (2004).The data was analyzed with the SPSS Windows 19.0 program for statistical analysis of the real numbers, percentages, one-way ANOVAs, independent t-tests, and Pearson's correlation coefficients. The results were as follows: 1. The mean score of the parenting stress level of the participants was 2.98± 0.61 out of 5,and the mean score of the stress coping style was 2.45± 0.31 out of 4. 2. The level of the nurses' parenting stress showed significant differences according to marital satisfaction (F = 7.19,p = .001), turn over intention (t=3.27,p = .001), satisfaction with parenting support from their husbands (F = 4.63,p = .012), and satisfaction with the consideration offered to parents at workplace (F = 6.82,p = .002). The level of the nurses' stress coping styles was statistically different according to marital satisfaction (F =4.70,p=.011) in the lower categories of the general characteristics. 3. There was no significant statistical correlation between the nurses' parenting stress levels and their stress coping styles. Among the parenting stress factors,-'parenting role performance burden' and 'de-stressing factors'-had a negative correlation with each other (r = -.23, p = .010), and 'problem-based coping style' could be found in the lower categories of the stress-coping styles. The results of this study reveal that nurses with preschoolers suffered from parenting stress much more than do non-nurses who have preschoolers, and their parenting stress is induced mostly by external factors such as lack of support from husband and work place. Thus, it is necessary to implement a practical and specific system to reduce the parenting stress of nurses who nurture preschoolers.

본 연구는 취학 전 아동이 있는 간호사의 양육스트레스와 스트레스 대처방식을 파악하고 이들의 관계를 분석한 서술적 조사연구이다. 연구대상자는 취학 전 아동이 있는 간호사 119명을 대상으로 하였으며 연구기간은 2013년 8월 5일부터 10월 31일까지 진행되었다. 연구도구로 「양육스트레스」는 김기현과 강희경(1997)이 개발한 척도, 「스트레스 대처방식」은 Lazarus와 Folkman(1984)이 개발하고 김정희(1987)가 번안한 것을 정유미(2004)가 수정한 척도를 사용하였다. 자료 분석은 SPSS 19.0Win통계 프로그램을 이용하였고, 빈도와 백분율,One-way ANOVA, Independent t-test, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient을 사용하여 분석하였다. 본 연구결과는 다음과 같다 1. 대상자의 양육스트레스 정도는 최대 5점에 평균 2.98±0.61이었으며 대상자의 스트레스 대처방식은 최대 4점에 평균 2.45±0.31이었다. 2. 대상자의 양육스트레스 정도는 일반적 특성 중 결혼생활만족도(F=7.19,p=.001), 양육으로 인한 이직의도(t=3.27,p=.001),남편의 양육지지 만족도(F=4.63,p=.012), 직장의 양육배려 만족도(F=6.82,p=.002)에 따라 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다. 대상자의 스트레스 대처방식은 일반적 특성 중 결혼생활만족도(F=4.70,p=.011)에 따라 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다. 3. 대상자의 양육스트레스와 스트레스 대처방식간의 관계는 통계적으로 유의한 상관관계가 나타나지 않았다. 다만 양육스트레스 요인 중 ‘부모역할수행에 대한 부담감 및 디스트레스 요인’과 스트레스 대처방식 중 문제 중심 대처방식(r=-.23,p=.010)간에는 유의한 음의 상관관계를 보였다. 본 연구결과를 통해 취학 전 아동이 있는 간호사들은 일반어머니에 비해 높은 양육 스트레스를 경험하고 있으며 이들의 양육스트레스는 남편이나 직장 등 외부 요인에 의해 영향을 받고 있음을 알 수 있어,대상자의 특성을 고려하여 양육스트레스를 줄일 수 있는 보다 현실적이고 구체적인 제도마련이 필요하다.
