Abstract
This cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the levels of job stress, patient safety culture awareness, and patient safety nursing activities of intensive care unit(ICU) nurses, and to identify factors influencing patient safety nursing activities. Data were collected from 161 ICU nurses working for two university-affiliated hospitals located in Gyeonggi-do between June 30 and July 30, 2020. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis using the SPSS / WIN 22.0 program. The results of this study were as follows.
1) The average levels of job stress, patient safety culture awareness, and patient safety nursing activities were 3.48, 3.44, and 4.45 out of 5, respectively.
2) There were statistically significant differences in patient safety nursing activities by career in current workplace(F=6.72, p=.002), position(t=-2.54, p=.013), and experience for healthcare accreditation system(t=3.13, p=.004).
3) Patient safety nursing activities correlated positively with patient safety culture awareness(r=.43, p<.001).
4) As a result of hierarchical multiple regression, the identified factors affecting patient safety nursing activities were patient safety culture awareness, position, experience for healthcare accreditation system and, career in current workplace(F=11.57, p<.001). Significant factors in bivariate analyses were entered in the regression analysis. The model explained approximately 27% of the variance in patient safety nursing activities. Patient safety culture awareness(β=.40, p<.001) and career in current workplace(β=.19, p=.020) were found to be statistically significant factors affecting patient safety nursing activities.
